The meeting of poles depends on us

Living together becomes difficult as the anti-social character of individualization in modern society takes over and prevents us from meeting. At the same time, a multiplicity of viewpoints leads to all kinds of life projects which often collide.

Completion of Rudolf Steiners complete works

The complete edition was originally planned to comprise 354 volumes, but it has grown to 456 volumes due to additions made over the years. The remaining volumes of letters require particularly intensive work, as they contain a great deal of material that is difficult to organise.

This complete edition is intended for reading and study and is supplemented with biographical, bibliographical and historical references to the text. This heterogeneous work has evolved over decades, incorporating a wide variety of textual bases and differing approaches and levels of editing.

Since Rudolf Steiner delivered all his lectures extemporaneously, no handwritten records by him have survived. Apart from a few notes and sketches, the only records that have survived are the transcripts taken by listeners (especially using shorthand). Therefore, the approximately 300 volumes of lectures in the complete edition do not have a handwritten text basis by R. Steiner himself, but are based on edited lecture notes.

Rudolf Steiner himself reviewed very few of the lecture editions. Therefore, like other editions of philosophers' works (e.g. Aristotle's or Hegel's lectures), these editions are texts that were neither written nor edited by the author, nor authorised by him. The publisher and the Rudolf Steiner Archive consider it their duty to ensure the work is always available. Out-of-print volumes are reprinted whenever possible, which sometimes involves extraordinarily complex work, especially in the case of the lectures. Sometimes, the texts must be compared with newly accessible documents or additions to the archive, and occasionally, a partial or complete re-transliteration of the original stenographic transcripts is necessary. Preparing or supplementing the notes included with each volume often requires extensive research. The complete edition is now also available as a digital online version. The 1961 edition plan is divided into three sections:

A. Writing

– Works (GA 1-28)

– Collected Essays (GA 29-36)

– Letters, sayings, fragments (GA 38-49)

B. Lectures

– Public lectures (GA 51-85)
– Lectures to members of the Theosophical, later Anthroposophical Society(GA 88-270)
– Lectures and courses on specific fields (GA 271-354)

C. Reproductions and publications from the Artistic legacy

Between 2016 and 2025 alone, 58 volumes of the Collected Works (GA) were published, bringing the total to around 450 volumes. Thanks to the tireless efforts of the editors at the Rudolf Steiner Archive and the generous support of loyal patrons, it has been possible to include all known and available material on Rudolf Steiner's work in the Collected Works over the past seven decades. This only partially includes documents directly related to his activities, such as minutes, notes, recollections by contemporaries, letters to him, programmes, posters and lists of participants. The Collected Works thus represent a virtually inexhaustible resource for understanding and exploring Rudolf Steiner's work in all its facets.

The completion of this monumental edition is indeed a cause for celebration. The Rudolf Steiner Archive and the General Anthroposophical Society invite every member to a special event on the 17th April 2026 from 5 to 8 pm at the Goetheanum, as part of the public programme of the General Assembly of the General Anthroposophical Society.
